New briefing for researchers, voluntary and community sector organisations, and funders on working together on research involving parents in the first 1001 days

Published on Wednesday, 18 December 2024 Post

A new collaborative briefing aims to improve parents' experiences of taking part in research and also to improve researchers' and improve the ability of voluntary and community sector organisations' (VCSOs) to work together effectively.

Parents may be involved in research as research participants or in a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) role. There are many small-to-medium VCSOs in the UK working directly with parents who are vulnerable or disadvantaged. These parents face significant barriers of time, cost, language, confidence and trust in getting involved in research, which means that their experiences, perspectives and outcomes are often under-represented.

Academic researchers who are seeking to involve parents may approach VCSOs to recruit vulnerable or disadvantaged parents. The new briefing is based on workshops with researchers and representatives of VCSOs. It addresses:

  • Key challenges
  • Good practice suggestions for researchers and VCSOs
  • An example checklist for VCSOs to assess research requests
  • Tips for researchers on supporting parents as PPI participants
  • Recommendations for funders
