Caesarean-born children show increased risk of severe childhood infections

Published on Friday, 20 November 2020 Post

Marian Knight has collaboratored in a multicountry population-based cohort study, led by Jessica E. Miller from the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Australia, The aim of the study was to explore the relationship between mode of birth and childhood infection-related hospitalisation. The study, published today in PLOS Medicne. found that infants born by caesarean section have an increased risk of hospital admission with infection during childhood and that new mothers can potentially offset this risk through postnatal actions such as breast feeding and skin-to-skin contact.
