Researchers from the NPEU Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) are coordinating a new trial called neoGASTRIC. The trial will be the largest neonatal trial in the UK to date and will look at whether the routine measurement of gastric residual volumes (checking to see how much milk is left in the baby's stomach before the next feed) is good or bad for preterm babies, born more than 6 weeks early. The trial will test whether not routinely measuring gastric residual volumes, compared to routinely measuring them, helps premature babies get to full milk feeds more quickly without increasing harm.

The trial is being conducted in both the UK and Australia and will aim to recruit approximately 7000 babies, across the two countries. Recruitment is due to start in early 2023. The NPEU CTU is working with the lead researcher, Professor Chris Gale at Imperial College London and researchers at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

For more information please see the trial website neoGASTRIC | NPEU (ox.ac.uk).
