Dr Ling Jie Cheng PhD, MPH, BSN (Hons), RN

Biography

Dr Cheng Ling Jie is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford, supported by the prestigious NUS-Overseas Postdoctoral Fellowship under the Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent (START) Award from the Ministry of Education, Singapore. He is part of a team of five researchers engaged in a programme of work in maternal and child health, focusing on economic evaluations and health economic analyses at the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit. His research integrates evidence synthesis and decision-analytic modelling to inform cost-effectiveness evaluations and estimate long-term societal costs and outcomes in this field.

In addition, Dr Cheng holds an academic appointment as a Senior Tutor at the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies (NUS Nursing), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore, Singapore. He graduated from NUS Nursing with a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) (Honours), supported by the Alexandra Health Nursing Scholarship, and later earned a Master of Public Health and a PhD in Public Health from NUS Public Health, where he was awarded the distinguished Tan Kah Kee Postgraduate Scholarship for academic excellence.

Prior to academia, Dr Cheng gained extensive clinical experience at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, part of the National Healthcare Group in Singapore. He worked across diverse settings, including acute care, surgical units, and specialised geriatric services. As a member of the executive committee for the Nursing Research Unit, Dr Cheng spearheaded evidence-based practice initiatives, oversaw research projects, and guided nursing staff in their professional development.

Dr Cheng's research focuses on Health Economics and Outcomes Research under the VALUE programme, encompassing health measurement and valuation, PROMs applications, decision-support tools, health economics evaluations, and nursing practice empowerment. He has secured research funding exceeding SGD 1.14 million and published over 60 peer-reviewed articles. He has also supervised more than 30 undergraduate and eight postgraduate students, many of whom have successfully published in leading journals and presented at international conferences.

As an educator, Dr Cheng teaches Clinical Epidemiology, Applied Research Methods, and Medical Statistics at NUS Nursing and NUS Public Health. He emphasises critical thinking, evidence-based practice, and the practical application of theoretical knowledge, earning Graduate Student Teaching Awards in 2023 and 2024 from NUS Public Health.

Internationally, Dr Cheng is an active member of professional organisations such as the EuroQol Group Association (EuroQol Group), the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) and the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL) and a founding member of the EuroQol PhD Network and an. He also serves as a peer reviewer for leading journals, including International Journal of Nursing Studies, International Journal of Surgery, Value in Health, and BMC Medical Research Methodology.
